Otsego County Jail Roster and Inmate Population

Otsego County inmate population records are available through two primary channels. The Otsego County Sheriff's Office in Gaylord handles local jail records for people in county custody. The Michigan Department of Corrections handles records for people serving state sentences. MDOC's Offender Tracking Information System, OTIS, is a free online tool that lets you search state inmates by name. For those still in the county jail awaiting trial or serving short sentences, the sheriff's office is the place to call. This page walks through both options and covers related resources like VINELink, court records, and criminal history databases.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail and is the main source for local inmate population information. When someone is arrested in the county, their booking data, including name, charges, date, and bond amount, is entered into the sheriff's records. These records are public under Michigan's open records laws.

Find the Otsego County Sheriff's Office at 124 S. Court St., Gaylord, MI 49735. The phone number is (231) 732-5148. Calling this number is the quickest way to find out whether someone is currently in the county jail. Staff can confirm custody status and provide general information about a booking. If you plan to visit an inmate, check current visitation policies before you go, as hours and procedures can change.

Note: The county jail is separate from the state prison system. If a person has been convicted and transferred to MDOC custody, they will not appear in local jail records. Use OTIS for state inmates.

OTIS is the Michigan Department of Corrections' public inmate search system. It covers all people currently in MDOC custody, including state prison inmates, those in residential programs, and those on parole. Anyone from Otsego County who has been convicted of a felony and sent to a state facility can be found in OTIS for free.

You search OTIS by name or MDOC offender number. Results include the current facility, the conviction offense, how long the person is serving, and their projected release date. Parole status is shown where applicable. OTIS does not include people who are still at the county jail level, only those committed to MDOC custody.

Access OTIS at https://mdocweb.state.mi.us/OTIS2/otis2.aspx. No account is needed. The site is available on computers and mobile devices. Note: OTIS data is updated regularly, but very recent moves or releases may take time to appear in search results.

VINELink Inmate Notification Service

VINELink provides free custody change alerts to anyone who registers. If someone is released, transferred, or has another status update, VINELink sends you a notification by phone, text, or email. Coverage extends to both county jail inmates and MDOC-supervised offenders. The service is designed primarily for victims but is available to anyone who registers.

Visit www.vinelink.com to register or call 1-800-770-7657. You will need the inmate's name or ID to set up your alert. The service is free and runs twenty-four hours a day. Keep your contact information current in the system so you do not miss alerts.

Note: VINELink sends alerts when something changes. It is not a search tool. Use OTIS or the sheriff's office to find where an inmate is, then sign up for VINELink if you want future alerts.

FOIA Rights and Otsego County Inmate Records

Under Michigan's Freedom of Information Act, found at MCL 15.231, the public has the right to request records from government agencies. Both the Otsego County Sheriff's Office and MDOC must respond to FOIA requests. Inmate population records are generally open to the public, with limited exceptions for certain sensitive or investigative data.

To request records not available online, submit a written FOIA request to the appropriate agency. For county records, contact the Otsego County Sheriff. For state records, contact MDOC. Agencies are required to respond within a set period and to provide written reasons for any denials. Fees are regulated by state law.

Michigan's county jail statute, MCL 801.1, and its state corrections statute, MCL 800.31, set minimum standards for facility operations and recordkeeping. Note: FOIA gives you the right to ask, but not every record is releasable. Some personal data is protected by statute and will be withheld even from a valid request.

The registry is maintained by the Michigan State Police and is separate from the inmate database. Some registrants are in custody; others live in the community. It is a useful tool when you need information about whether someone has a qualifying sex offense conviction.

ICHAT at michigan.gov/msp/services/ichat provides public access to Michigan criminal conviction records for a small per-search fee. ICHAT shows convictions on file with Michigan but does not include records from other states or arrests without a conviction. Note: Use ICHAT to understand a person's prior Michigan conviction history. Use OTIS to find where they are currently housed if they are under MDOC supervision.
